About the program

Our approach to language instruction is rooted in both classical methods and the latest research on second-language acquisition. A solid grasp of grammar and morphology is indispensable, but it is not enough on its own.

We teach Arabic as a living language and emphasize both written and verbal communication. Over the course of a full academic year, this approach enables students to develop a grasp of the language that is natural and intuitive. Classroom hours are divided evenly between conversation and listening, readings in classical texts, and formal instruction in the rules of grammar and morphology.

Three tracks, one classroom

Classroom hours are divided evenly across three complementary tracks. Together they build the full set of skills needed to read, hear, and speak Arabic with confidence.

A lively, communicative classroom environment that develops natural speaking and listening skills. Students hone the full variety of communication skills key to full command of the language.

Sustained engagement with classical Arabic texts builds genuine reading fluency. Students develop the skill to engage directly with the foundational works of the tradition.

Formal instruction in the rules of nahw (grammar) and sarf (morphology). A solid grasp of these rules is indispensable to building true fluency in Arabic.

Beyond the classroom

Spiritual transformation is the heart of Tayseer's educational philosophy. Arabic Intensive students participate fully in activities that supplement the classroom and integrate them into the broader Tayseer community.

Daily group dhikr that grounds students in the spiritual tradition of the program and the cohort.

Seasonal retreats that step away from the daily classroom rhythm for sustained spiritual focus.

Outings into the surrounding East Tennessee landscape that build cohort relationships and offer time away from screens and texts.

A small number of classes on the Islamic sciences run in parallel with the Arabic Intensive, ensuring students stay connected to the broader Tayseer curriculum.
